Orange & Black Metalphoto® Aluminum Plates

Orange & Black Metalphoto® Anodized Aluminum Plates with Acrylic Pressure Sensitive Adhesive

Orange & Black Metalphoto® Anodized Aluminum Plates with Acrylic Pressure Sensitive Adhesive

One of the most attractive features of the Metalphoto® process is that the photographic image affords extreme detail and contrast at ANY size.

Drake Industries in Austin, Texas offers plates and tags manufactured with the Metalphoto® process in bold colors as well as the traditional black/natural aluminum background (silver).

The Metalphoto® process burns images, letters, and colors into photosensitive anodized aluminum.  Images and letters will never scrape off the way they might with silk screening.   The integrity of the aluminum is never compromised the way that it is when metal is etched or engraved.

How To Apply Aluminum Labels, Tags, Decals

April 6th, 2015 by

Aluminum labels are great for use in extreme conditions.  But the longevity of a label has a lot to do with how the label is applied.

Aluminum is a soft metal and will bend easily – care must be taken when removing aluminum labels from their liner AND when applying them to your product.  Bent aluminum labels will retain the shape of the bend and may not lie flat when adhered to a surface (seen below).  This label was peeled “up” away from the liner.  (This surface is powder coated aluminum.)

Bent Aluminum Label with Fingerprint, Removed Incorrectly

Bent Aluminum Label with Fingerprint, Removed Incorrectly from Liner

Here are some tips on how to remove aluminum labels from a liner without bending the label and applying the label to the surface of your product.

• Hands must be clean & dry

• The surface that the label will adhere to needs to be clean & dry

• Peel LINER away from labels,  do not peel labels “up” from liner (see video below)

•  If you peel the aluminum label away from the liner, the aluminum will bend “up” and may not adhere to the surface correctly

• These labels are NOT   REPOSITIONABLE.  The positioning of the label needs to be exact when applying because the pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive is very aggressive. Repositioning labels that have already been attached to a surface will bend the aluminum, twist the label, and degrade the adhesive.

Here’s a short video that shows you how to remove aluminum labels from a liner without bending the label.

Metalphoto®, Virtually Impervious to Chemicals

June 26th, 2014 by

Aluminum Metalphoto® tags, cut-outs and control panel labels are virtually impervious to chemicals, heat, abrasion, salt spray and sunlight and the photographic image affords extreme detail and contrast at any size.  Compare this to etched stainless steel tags that are vulnerable to corrosion and screen printed aluminum tags and plates that can be scratched.

Why Phenolic?

June 23rd, 2014 by

Phenolic is a rigid plastic composite material that has been used for tags, nameplates and panels since the 1940s.

Phenolic tags and cut-outs are brittle, disintegrate at high temperatures, and are not UV stable.  (Pictured below is a phenolic tag.)  There are options that are better suited for tags and plates besides phenolic.

Engraved Phenolic Tag

Aluminum Metalphoto® tags, cut-outs and control panel labels are MORE durable than phenolic (they are virtually impervious to chemicals, heat, abrasion, salt spray and sunlight) and the photographic image affords extreme detail and contrast at any size.

Aluminum Metalphoto Dial

Why choose Phenolic when a more modern process is available?

Metalphoto® is exceptionally durable:

  • Certified for 20 year plus for outdoor applications
  • UV-stable image is permanently sealed within the anodized aluminum
  • Virtually impervious to chemicals, heat, abrasion, salt spray and sunlight
  • Earned more top scores than any other IUID barcode label material tested by the U.S. Navy (NSWC, Corona Division, IUID Center; August 2011)

If you have a project that requires a UV resistant durable label or nametag consider the Metalphoto® process.  Contact Drake Industries for Metalphoto® samples and a free quote 800.531.5073 OR quotes@drake.com

Stainless Steel Plates withstand harsh conditions in the oil and gas fields.

Stainless Steel Plates withstand harsh conditions in the oil and gas fields.

Metalphoto® is the process of choice used around the world for label and name plates that must stand up to harsh weather and exposure to chemicals. Metalphoto® products are most likely used outdoors in heavy industrial environments like oil & gas exploration.

Strong, corrosion resistant, and heat resistant stainless steel applications by Drake are designed and manufactured to withstand exposure to chemicals, fuels, grime, and extreme weather while maintaining functionality and legibility of information. Stainless steel applications are typically outdoors and used in heavy industry.

Anodized aluminum is well-suited for labels and name plates that are used in rugged environments. Drake anodized aluminum product marking solutions are designed to endure the effects of sunlight, high temperatures, cleaning solvents, salt, and abrasives. Drake anodized aluminum tags and labels are available in thickness from .003″ to .032″ and can be printed and die cut to customer design. Typically used outdoors.

Lexan®/polycarbonate material is known for its durability and professional appearance. Drake Lexan® applications are available in thicknesses of .005″ to .030″ and can be printed and die cut to customer design, including PMS color matching. Lexan®/polycarbonate material is typically used indoors for product marking and branding purposes.

Mylar®/polyester labels maintain a professional glossy or matte appearance in harsh environments including heat, sunlight, constant moisture/humidity, impacts and/or UV exposure. Mylar®/polyester labels are most commonly used for product marking applications on computers, consumer electronics. Mylar®/polyester labels are effective both indoors and outdoors.

Drake Industries has you covered whether your label needs to withstand harsh weather and exposure to chemicals or simple day to day use. We are a custom shop that specializes in low volume orders and prototypes.  Call us to discuss your project today 800.531.5073 or email us at quotes@drake.com.
