Durability for Your Brand

Your product has been tested and is ready for the launch.  Your logo has been crafted with the utmost care.  Ensure that your branding efforts stand the tests of time and usage with durable branding materials.

Polycarbonate is a popular choice for for graphic overlays, control panels, nameplates, membrane switches, serial tags, and prototypes.  It maintains its appearance in normal and rugged settings (like industrial environments) when exposed to harsh chemicals and extreme weather.  (Polycarbonate is also known by brand name Lexan®.)  Labels, tags, and overlays are available by the sheet.

Polyester (brand name Mylar®) is also an incredibly durable material for branding. Metallic and “flat” colors are both effective when used on polyester. Typically a polyester label will have a clear or matte polyester overlay over the graphics to enhance the durability of the label or decal.  Drake polyester labels offer durability against water, UV rays, and chemicals/solvents.  Labels and decals are available by the roll with pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive.

When affixed properly, metal can be one of the most durable materials to use for logo and branding decals and tags.  The .062 brass alloy branding plate below is 2″ x  3.5″.  The brass is pre-masked and black graphics are screened on.  The parts were made without adhesive – the plates will be placed into a oval inlay on a wooden pool table.

Polycarbonate (or Lexan®) is a plastic material that is known for its durability and is often used when a resistant, tough material is required for labels and tags.  It can be used for control panels, nameplates, graphic overlays, membrane switches, and variable serial tags.  Polycarbonate is suitable for branding purposes and is durable enough for tough environments like oil fields.

Lexan® labels and tags from Drake are designed to be weather & chemical resistant and to maintain appearance, longevity, legibility and functionality of information under tough conditions.  Resistant to chemicals such as caustic soda, petro diesel, and emulsifiers.

Drake Industries’ Lexan® applications are available in thicknesses of .005″ to .030″ and can be printed and die cut to customer design, including PMS color matching. One of the most attractive features of the Metalphoto® process is that the photographic image affords extreme detail and contrast at ANY size.

Drake Industries in Austin, Texas offers plates and tags manufactured with the Metalphoto® process in bold colors as well as the traditional black/natural aluminum background (silver).

The Metalphoto® process burns images, letters, and colors into photosensitive anodized aluminum.  Images and letters will never scrape off the way they might with silk screening.   The integrity of the aluminum is never compromised the way that it is when metal is etched or engraved.

Polycarbonate material, sometimes referred to as Lexan®, is known for its durability and professional appearance.

It is used in many industries for product marking applications as

  • Control Panels,
  • Nameplates,
  • Overlays,
  • Membrane Switches, and
  • Serial Tags

Examples shown here are ATM labels.  Polycarbonate is chemical and solvent resistant, has high temperature resistance, and has limited UV resistance.  It is an excellent choice of material for use on ATMs.  Images and text are transferred onto polycarbonate digitally or using silk screen technology.

Polycarbonate is also commonly used for prototype labels and overlays.

NEC and UL Compliant Solar Installation Labels

Drake Industries manufactures Turn Key custom labels, plates & placards like the red Solar Installation Map shown below.   These labels and markings can be manufactured to be NEC and UL compliant.

In the NEC 2014 code, some field applied labels, warning(s), and markings are required to have RED TEXT on a WHITE BACK GROUND.  Text should be 3/8 in. (.375) tall and be REFLECTIVE so that the labels/warnings are clearly visible in the beam of a flashlight.

Components of solar home PV systems that might be labeled: solar photovoltaic cells (PV panels), aluminum frames (roof top racks), inverters, charge controllers, storage batteries, utility meters, rapid shut down switches, and wires & cables.

Polyester Thermal Transfer/ Hot Stamp labels like the yellow and red labels shown here require pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive.   This type of label or decal is available by the roll.  These examples have 0.125″ radius (rounded) corners which will prolong the life of the labels (stickers).

How To Apply Aluminum Labels, Tags, Decals

Aluminum labels are great for use in extreme conditions.  But the longevity of a label has a lot to do with how the label is applied.

Aluminum is a soft metal and will bend easily – care must be taken when removing aluminum labels from their liner AND when applying them to your product.  Bent aluminum labels will retain the shape of the bend and may not lie flat when adhered to a surface (seen below).  This label was peeled “up” away from the liner.  (This surface is powder coated aluminum.)

Here are some tips on how to remove aluminum labels from a liner without bending the label and applying the label to the surface of your product.

• Hands must be clean & dry

• The surface that the label will adhere to needs to be clean & dry

• Peel LINER away from labels,  do not peel labels “up” from liner (see video below)

•  If you peel the aluminum label away from the liner, the aluminum will bend “up” and may not adhere to the surface correctly

• These labels are NOT   REPOSITIONABLE.  The positioning of the label needs to be exact when applying because the pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive is very aggressive. Repositioning labels that have already been attached to a surface will bend the aluminum, twist the label, and degrade the adhesive.

Metalphoto®, Virtually Impervious to Chemicals

Aluminum Metalphoto® tags, cut-outs and control panel labels are virtually impervious to chemicals, heat, abrasion, salt spray and sunlight and the photographic image affords extreme detail and contrast at any size.  Compare this to etched stainless steel tags that are vulnerable to corrosion and screen printed aluminum tags and plates that can be scratched.

Why Phenolic?

Phenolic is a rigid plastic composite material that has been used for tags, nameplates and panels since the 1940s.

Phenolic tags and cut-outs are brittle, disintegrate at high temperatures, and are not UV stable.  (Pictured below is a phenolic tag.)  There are options that are better suited for tags and plates besides phenolic.

Aluminum Metalphoto® tags, cut-outs and control panel labels are MORE durable than phenolic (they are virtually impervious to chemicals, heat, abrasion, salt spray and sunlight) and the photographic image affords extreme detail and contrast at any size.
